While on a road trip this past month, my other half and I stopped off at
Cracker Barrel, seeing that we had never been to one, nor did we have
one local back home. Besides a restaurant, this place also feature a
nifty little shopping outlet which features gobs of goodies from the
past.
I had never heard of Delicious Different Big Red Soda before,
but after picking up a bottle and doing a little research I learned that
this particular bottle was considered retro, as it was made with pure
sugar, and it was a hugely popular drink back in the 1970's.
I honestly did not know what to expect, but due to the name I
immediately associated it with Big Red gum. A gum that would be
considered a 'hot' gum due to the high level of cinnamon flavor that it
had. I sort of figured that this soda, would share that same hot flavor
of cinnamon. I was wrong, but was I disappointed in what this retro
flavor delivered?
Sadly, it is not a soda I would ever long for, or miss for that fact,
and trust me I am not trying to knock those 70's children on their
classical favorite, but for me this one was just a total miss.
The Flavor:
The flavor that Delicious Different Big Red Soda delivers is that of
melted down cotton candy with a ton of carbonation; for some this would
be a delicious brew, however for me in my adult years, it is just far
too child like a drink for me to really enjoy. Children however may find
a love for this particular flavor. But for me, the sugary carnival
flavor overwhelms with your first sip, and as you wash it down you are
primarily left with a smooth and sugary cotton candy after taste.
The carbonation level is set high on this one, which I particularly
liked, but as far as wanting another, or wishing I had purchased more
than 1 bottle, well, that allure was just not there.
Overall:
Delicious Different Big Red Soda is just OK in my opinion. Adults may
not find this one particularly delightful, but children and teens would
likely love it. Priced at under $2.00 for the bottle though, I would say
it was worth having the opportunity to try.
